USDA, corn and soybeans are the hottest crop crops in the world right now, according to a new infographic.
The new report, which came out Monday from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), says there are more than 8,000 active super-grains in use.
A new crop is often named after an animal, like “grapeseed,” “kimchi,” “ferns,” “chickpeas” or “corn.”
But the agency says super-grain is now a “trend” among agribusinesses, and it’s likely the industry is now using the term to describe its crop.
The super-crop is also a marketing term, the report says.
The USDA says it’s a marketing phrase because it “seems to have been popularized through a variety of media including blogs, news outlets, and social media.”
“It’s not just for the sake of it,” said Michelle B. Johnson, an associate professor at the University of Missouri, who studies super-graphes.
“This crop is super-tough.
It has great nutrient-dense qualities.
It’s very high in protein.
It is low in calories and very low in sugar.”
The USDA also noted super-powders are “not just for their nutritional value but also for their health benefits.”
Super-gramps are produced in a controlled manner to preserve the grain for a longer time, but are grown in a very controlled environment, so they have to be “cultured” to obtain the nutrients they need.
“It is extremely difficult to produce super-dwarf grains without using a high-tech cultivation process, which involves a number of steps, from grain-gathering to nutrient-gaining,” the USDA wrote.
The study notes super-gluten, which is the source of super-wheat gluten, has become a marketing trend.
“The use of gluten as a marketing element is often attributed to its ability to protect from the gluten allergens,” the report said.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says gluten-free diets are the “new norm” in the U.K., France and Canada, but the USDA notes there are still challenges in developing and testing these diets.
“It’s critical that we continue to explore new ways to improve our understanding of the effects of these diets,” it said.
